For years, I devoted time and effort trying to generate consistent profits from options trading around earnings announcements. On the surface, it seemed like a straightforward opportunity: implied volatility (IV) typically surged before earnings and collapsed immediately after. Logically, there had to be a way to take advantage of this setup.

I experimented extensively—selling Iron Condors, structuring trades around inflated IV, and evaluating expected moves using the ATM Straddle or Market Maker Move. At times, these trades worked out very well, especially when the stock barely moved after earnings. But just as often, sharp post-earnings swings in either direction led to outsized losses. After years of trial and error, I had to accept that I hadn’t found a reliable, repeatable system that aligned with my preference for steady and consistent growth.

Eventually, a shift in perspective changed everything. Instead of fighting post-earnings volatility crush, I began exploring ways to trade earnings in a safer, lower-risk, non-directional manner. That adjustment was the breakthrough: by positioning ahead of the event and using IV itself as the edge, my results became far more consistent.
